Interesting presentation on future of social networking

February 16th, 2009

Came across this interesting presentation about future of social networking,

Notes

Although single identity for all social sites is very interesting idea, it will be interesting to see how existing (and new) social sites adapt to concept of single identity in near future.

Today’s No.1 social networking site - Facebook

February 16th, 2009

Here are top 5 social sites accordingly to unique visitors,

  • Facebook               68 million
  • Myspace                58 million
  • Classmates           17 million
  • Reunion                16 million
  • Linkedin               11 million

Here are top 5 social sites accordingly to monthly visits,

  • Facebook              1.1 billion!!
  • Myspace              810 million
  • Twitter                  54 million
  • Flixster                 53 million

Top 25 Social networking sites in USA
Accordingly to survey by compete.com, facebook took over myspace’s no.1 position in social networking category and rapidly gaining share by introducing new innovative concepts.

Interestingly twitter zoomed from 22nd to 3rd leaving orkut, linkedin, bebo far far behind. Note that this is based on monthly visits and not unique visitors.

No. 1 social networking site in India - Orkut

February 14th, 2009

Even though Facebook rules all over the world, Orkut has clear advantage in India.

Indians prefer to hang out on Orkut and make friends than Facebook or any other social site.

According to comscore.com here are Top 5 social networking sites in India by unique visitors,

  • Orkut                  12 million
  • Facebook            4 million
  • BharatStudent     3.2 million
  • hi5.com              2 million
  • ibibo.com           990K

You can read more about this press release here.

Even if there are 12 million users, Orkut apps are not gaining momentum as compared to apps available on Facebook. One of the reason for this (IMO) is lack of tight integration of apps into the website.

Orkut still has long way to go and provide more meaningful and useful applications that will unleash power of social networking and make Indian Orkut users “addict” (in good sense) to spend more time on the site (in other words, virtually socializing more!)

Some Interesting facts about Internet Users in India

January 5th, 2009

According to a survey only 3.7% of entire Indian population uses internet.  This is so skewed from USA where 73.6% of USA population uses Internet. This is one of the primary reasons why we don’t see lots of successful Indian Start ups.

Every Startup in India should consider this fact while designing any product. Although I don’t deny importance of local market, I think while designing any product, people should think about global (more matured) market.

I am still finding single Indian Start up which has substantial footprint outside India! :(

Going further, approximately 19 million users are registered with social networking sites in India which is 0.16% of entire population. USA has approximate 183 million users registered on various social networking sites.
